Back in 2011, a demand was noticed for an Optometry course in the South West. As such, The University of Plymouth had its first intake to its BSc (Hons) Optometry programme in the September of that year.
During the programme's first year, student Claire Gorman set up a social group, then known as The Plymouth Eye Society or 'EyeSoc'. The society became affiliated with The University of Plymouth Students' Union (UPSU) in 2012 and has since been the exclusive society for optometry students at The University of Plymouth.
Following a rebrand in 2017, 'EyeSoc' became The Plymouth Optometry Society or 'OpSoc', and today represents nearly 200 Optometry students.
Responsible for many social, sport, charity and professional events throughout the year, we have an active calendar, which you can see here.
We work closely with the academic team at the University and clinic staff at the Centre for Eyecare Excellence (CEE), to make sure students enjoy their time at university as much as possible.
Following our first President Claire, there has been a number of committees who have led our society to where it is today. You can find out about these on our Committee page.
