Back in 2011, a demand was noticed for an Optometry course in the South West. As such, University of Plymouth had its first intake to its BSc (Hons) Optometry programme in September of that year.
During the programme's first year, student Claire Gorman set up a social group, then known as Plymouth Eye Society or 'EyeSoc'. The society became affiliated with the University of Plymouth Students' Union (UPSU) in 2012 and has since been the exclusive society for optometry students at University of Plymouth.
Following a rebrand in 2017, 'EyeSoc' became Plymouth Optometry Society or 'OpSoc' and today, represents nearly 200 optometry students studying at Plymouth. Responsible for many social events throughout the year, as well as professional events, the society has an active calendar (Events Calendar) and works closely with the academic team at the university to enhance the student experience.
Following our first President Claire, there has been a number of committees who have led our society to where it is today. You can find out about these on our Committee page.
You can find out more about our social events and professional networking events by reviewing the respective pages, Socials and Professional Events.
